Thoracic Mesothelioma

Definition: Pleural mesothelioma is a rare and aggressive cancer that develops in the lining of the lungs, known as the pleura, typically caused by asbestos exposure.

Current Status and Incidence: It accounts for about 75% of all mesothelioma cases. Despite regulations, there are still incidences due to long latency periods between exposure and diagnosis.

Treatment Methods: Combination of surgery, chemotherapy, and radiation therapy. Palliative treatments may also be used to relieve symptoms.

Current Status and Incidence: It is a rare disease, representing about 15-20% of all mesothelioma diagnoses.

Treatment Methods: Treatment may involve cytoreductive surgery combined with hyperthermic intraperitoneal chemotherapy (HIPEC), radiation therapy, and palliative care.
